Ritedose Expands Commitment to Service with 1,000 Hours of Purpose Initiative

The Ritedose Corporation announced a groundbreaking new volunteer program: 1,000 Hours of Purpose.

"1,000 Hours of Purpose" is a year-long initiative that provides Ritedose employees with the opportunity to dedicate their time, skills and resources to support meaningful causes across the Midlands of South Carolina.

Under the new program, Ritedose is collaborating with United Way of the Midlands and donating 1,000 hours of employee time to support various local organizations that are addressing basic human needs like hunger and housing.

According to United Way, between 15 percent and 20 percent of households within the Midlands region live below the poverty level.

In Richland County, a further 35 percent fall below the "ALICE" threshold (ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed—households earning more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county), meaning that nearly half of the local population may struggle to make ends meet.

Ritedose employees will receive monthly opportunities for a full day of volunteering with designated local organizations such as Homeless No More, which supports people who are temporarily unhoused; Home Works of America, which provides home repair services to low-income homeowners; Palmetto Place, a safe shelter for homeless youth in South Carolina; and Transitions, which helps move previously unhoused people into new homes.

"Serving the community is deeply engrained in our culture. It's a core value and natural part of who we are," said Janisha Thomas, chief human resource officer at Ritedose.

Thomas added, "Through the 1000 Hours of Purpose initiative, we are able to expand our agency partnerships and have an even greater impact in the community. In doing so, we not only serve others, but create opportunities for our employees to bond while supporting worthy causes."

While 1,000 Hours of Purpose is a new volunteer initiative, it continues a long tradition of Ritedose community involvement.

The organization expects to again participate in the American Heart Association's Annual Field Day in April; support United Way of the Midlands' "Ready Set Supply" drive in July; and serve with the Salvation Army's Holiday Warehouse in December.

Over the past several years, Ritedose has additionally worked with SC ThriveEpworth Children's HomeRonald McDonald HouseHarvest Hope Food BankDispensary of Hope and more.

"When we step up, invest in the communities we call home, and make service part of the culture, we see ripples of impact far greater than we can imagine," Thomas added. "We truly experience—as we say at Ritedose—a career full of growth and a life full of impact."

SouthCon Building Group Wins National Excellence in Construction Award for Boone Hall & Gardens’ 1850s Gin House Renovation, Addition

SouthCon Building Group, a full-service general contractor based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, received a National Excellence in Construction (EIC) Award for a local historic preservation project during the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Convention 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 26.

SouthCon was National Runner-Up in the Historical Restoration (Up to $15 million) category, bringing home ABC’s Pyramid Award for its performance on the 1850s Gin House Renovation and Addition project at Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in Mount Pleasant.

Said SouthCon Building Group President and CEO Chris Spach: "The purpose of this complicated interior and exterior restoration project was to create a multi-purpose event space set against a timeless backdrop. Having our work recognized with distinction at the national level is a great honor.”

SouthCon became eligible to compete in ABC’s National EIC Awards competition last fall after winning the first-place Eagle Award for this project at the ABC Carolinas chapter level.

National ABC EIC Award winners were selected from hundreds of entries submitted from across the country.

They were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges.

This year’s judges included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, Construction Owners Association of America, the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Building Sciences, the Smithsonian Institution and other select construction-related organizations nationwide.

Boone Hall’s Gin House Renovation and Addition was a project that created a multipurpose event space, gift shop and museum at the heart of the plantation.

Built more than 170 years ago to house the plantation’s original cotton gin, the two-story “Gin House” had been “shuttered” for 15 years when SouthCon began renovation/restoration activities.

One major unexpected challenge was creating a seamless tie-in from the Gin House to the new construction portion due to a severely bulging north wall.

In February 2024, SouthCon was part of a team that received two Carolopolis Awards from the Preservation Society of Charleston for this project – one for Exterior renovations, the other for Interior renovations.

The award-winning project team included Goff D’Antonio Associates, architect; EM Structural Engineers; DWG Consulting Engineers (MEP); and SouthCon Building Group, general contractor. Boone Hall’s Gin House was the only project to win in more than one category.

SouthCon Building Group serves commercial, industrial, retail and institutional clients throughout the Carolinas and Georgia from its headquarters in Mount Pleasant.

SouthCon Building Group was founded in 2008 by Spach.
