Boise Cascade Adding Distribution Centers in Two New Markets

Boise Cascade’s Building Materials Distribution (BMD) division announced the expansion of its distribution capacity in two markets.

The company finalized the acquisition of 45-acres in Walterboro, S.C., to build a new distribution facility. Located approximately 45 miles west of Charleston, the property will be Boise Cascade’s first distribution center in the state.

Officials said the location is rail-served and will help better serve customers in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Columbia, S.C., as well as Savannah, Ga. The BMD division currently serves those markets through its facilities in Greensboro, N.C., and Atlanta, Ga. 

The company also closed on the purchase of a 34-acre land parcel in Hondo, Texas, to build another new distribution facility. Located approximately 40 miles west of San Antonio, Tex.,, this property will be the third Boise Cascade distribution center in the state, along with its two door shops in Houston and Dallas.

Officials said the property is rail-served and will help serve customers in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and the Rio Grande Valley.

“Consistent with our strategy, these investments demonstrate our commitment to our customers and supplier partners in several high-growth markets,” said Jeff Strom, BMD executive vice president.

“We are thrilled to increase our diversification of product offerings. This will allow us to expand in engineered wood products, leading brands of general line building materials, as well as lumber and panels products.”

Construction is expected to begin soon.

Boise Cascade is one of the largest producers of engineered wood products and plywood in North America and a leading U.S. wholesale distributor of building products.

Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC Expanding Operations in Horry County

Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC, a leading bottle manufacturer, distributor and seller for Pepsi-Cola products, announced plans to expand operations in Horry County.

The company’s $15 million investment will create 27 jobs, according to the South Carolina Department of Commerce. 

PBV has operated out of its current distribution warehouse in Conway since 2009. 

The expansion will relocate the company within the county to the new Palmetto Coast Industrial Park off Water Tower Road in North Myrtle Beach where PBV will build a 164,850-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution warehouse to accommodate increased customer and consumer demand and allow for future growth, Commerce officials said.

The new Horry County facility will continue to serve as the company’s only South Carolina location.

The expansion is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2023. Those interested in joining PBV should go to the company’s careers page.

PBV is one of the nation’s largest privately held bottlers of Pepsi-Cola beverage products with 19 locations across South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland and Delaware.

The company’s broad product portfolio includes top consumer brands like Pepsi, Aquafina, Lipton, Gatorade, Starbucks and more.

The state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project.

The council also awarded a $100,000 Rural Infrastructure (RIF) grant to Horry County to assist with real property improvements.

TD SYNNEX Share the Magic Distributes $1.6 Million To Upstate Children’s Charities

TD SYNNEX Share the Magic, a charitable fundraising initiative created by Peter Larocque, president of North America for TD SYNNEX, presented checks totaling $1.6 million to four Upstate children’s charities.

South Carolina beneficiaries of TD SYNNEX Share the Magic are: A Child’s HavenClement’s KindnessMake-A-Wish South Carolina and Pendleton Place. Since its inception in 2011, TD SYNNEX Share the Magic has raised $19 million.

“We are incredibly happy with this year’s record-breaking fundraising total, which exceeded all expectations,” said Larocque. “It’s amazing to think that when we started Share the Magic in 2011, our goal was to raise $10 million in 10 years. Today we’ve raised $19 million in 12 years. The difference that makes for the families and children we serve cannot be measured.

"My sincerest gratitude goes out to our dedicated associates, business partners, local organizations and individuals.”

With the help of TD SYNNEX Share the Magic:

A Child’s Haven is exploring avenues to expand services to other locations with the goal of program replication so families all over the state have access to Therapeutic Child Care.

A Child’s Haven provides healing therapy for developmentally challenged, at-risk preschoolers, while fortifying vulnerable families and strengthening the community. Using a 2-Generational approach for infants, young children, and their caregivers, A Child’s Haven works to stop debilitating cycles of trauma and adversity that directly impact a child’s health and wellness over their lifetime.

Clement’s Kindness has been able to provide more than $1.4 million in financial assistance to Upstate families impacted by pediatric cancer and other blood disorders, as well as:

$83,500 – AYA Room at the St. Francis Cancer Center

$250,000 – Children’s Garden at the Cancer Survivor’s Park

$431,000 – Dr. Cary E. Stroud Camper Care Center 

Clement's Kindness Fund for the Children helps address the medical, psychological, social, emotional, and financial needs of Upstate families impacted by pediatric cancer and serious blood disorders.

The fund also provides financial support to the BI-LO Charities Children's Cancer Center and the Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center AYA Program, which directly impacts the patients and their families. 

Make-A-Wish South Carolina and TD SYNNEX Share the Magic have partnered for 12 years. With the support of TD SYNNEX Share the Magic, Make-A-Wish South Carolina has created hope and joy for over 2,000 children through their wish-granting.

As one of 58 Make-A-Wish chapters across the U.S., the South Carolina chapter has been granting wishes for local children with critical illnesses since 1984, relieving trauma and stress caused by their illness. The chapter recently celebrated its 4,000th wish. 

Pendleton Place expanded its shelter for youth aged 12-21 experiencing homelessness, while providing a loving home to 20 teens in foster care at Smith House in 2022. The Youth Resource Center nearly doubled service to youth experiencing homelessness to 126 with plans for growth in 2023.

Next year Pendleton Place will launch the first Family Resource Center (FRC) in Greenville County, which will enhance the current foster care entry and kinship caregiver services and offer new family strengthening services to reduce child abuse and neglect.

Pendleton Place offers programs that protect, equip, and heal vulnerable children, young adults and families. Pendleton Place strengthens children while rebuilding families. The goal is for each child to have a stable home environment and a bright future.

TD SYNNEX Share the Magic is a year-long initiative comprised of multiple community events, which culminated with a Celebration at Hartness in October featuring high-dollar silent and live auction items, as well as one of the most popular party bands in the country.

Community events in 2022 included the TD SYNNEX Share the Magic Day at the Greenville Drive, the TD SYNNEX Share the Magic Clay Shoot hosted by A Child’s Haven and the TD SYNNEX Share the Magic Golf Tournament.

Crissie Stapleton Assumes Chairmanship of the State Board of Education

At the Dec. 13, 2022, meeting of the State Board of Education, Crystal “Crissie” Stapleton, Ph.D., was sworn in as the chair of the State Board of Education (SBE).

The SBE also unanimously elected David O’Shields as chair-elect while recognizing four members who have fulfilled their terms on the board.

Stapleton lives in Barnwell County and was selected by the legislative delegation to represent the Second Circuit (Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell Counties) on the State Board of Education in 2019. She is superintendent of Barnwell School District 45, a position she has held since 2017.

Stapleton began her career in education in 2001 after graduating from the Honors College at Clemson University.

She has taught in Anderson School District One, Aiken County Public Schools, and Williston School District 29. 

She served as a kindergarten through eighth grade curriculum coach in Williston School District 29 and an assistant principal and director of curriculum and instruction in Barnwell School District 45 before becoming assistant superintendent in 2015.

Stapleton has a bachelor’s degree in elementary Education, a master’s degree in educational leadership, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Liberty University.

The SBE is the policy-making body for public K-12 education in South Carolina. It is established in Article XI § 1 of the South Carolina Constitution.

The SBE consists of 17 members, one appointed from each of the state's 16 judicial circuits by the legislators representing the various circuits, and a 17th member appointed by the governor. Members are appointed for four-year terms. 

County representation within a given circuit rotates from term to term. A full list of the board members can be found here.

In addition to Stapleton and O’Shields moving into leadership positions, four board members have fulfilled their terms and will be rotating off the board at the end of the current year.
