VOTING CHANGE
City of Greenville Moving to Nonpartisan Municipal Elections

The City of Greenville is preparing for a significant change in how its municipal elections are conducted. Starting in 2027, elections will shift to a nonpartisan format as mandated by state law for cities with populations over 39,000. This move is designed to foster greater inclusivity and transparency in local government, ensuring that candidates are chosen based on merit rather than party affiliation. Greenville’s City Council gave initial approval for an ordinance to amend city code, while retaining the city’s traditional election calendar, with general elections held in November of odd-numbered years. Previously, Greenville’s elections involved party-conducted primaries. Under the new system, all candidates compete in a single nonpartisan primary, and the two with the most votes move forward.
