Founded in the Upstate and still headquartered here a century later, Metromont has helped shape the region’s growth through projects that span generations and communities across South Carolina.
The company’s story began in Spartanburg in 1925 with Captain J. Roy Pennell and continues today in Greenville under the leadership of his grandson, Rick Pennell.
The anniversary event brought together associates, customers, suppliers, and community partners to celebrate 100 years of business and service.
Representatives from every Metromont region attended, including teams from South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia, along with associates from its parent company, Markel Ventures.
“Our story began with my grandfather, Captain J. Roy Pennell, whose vision and determination built the foundation for this company,” said Rick Pennell, Metromont CEO. “My father, Dick Pennell, strengthened that foundation and showed me the importance of leading with integrity and valuing people first. The values of faith, honor, and passion continue to guide Metromont, and they remain at the heart of who we are.”
A special video tribute highlighting the company’s century of service and family leadership played during the evening’s program, followed by remarks from Dawn Allen, vice president of Human Resources, Rick Pennell, and Doug Callender, president, who closed the celebration by looking ahead to Metromont’s next chapter.
Today, Metromont is one of the nation’s leading precast concrete manufacturers, known for projects such as the Honeywell headquarters in Charlotte, The Shepherd Hotel in Clemson, the SC Children’s Theatre in Greenville, and Gateway 737 student housing at the University of South Carolina.
The evening concluded with a fireworks display over Fluor Field.
A third-generation family company with six manufacturing facilities in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia, Metromont is recognized as an authority and pioneer in the engineering and manufacturing of precast concrete.
Metromont has completed thousands of projects for customers across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, including parking decks, data centers, schools, hotels, multi-family and student housing, office buildings, and stadiums.
