On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the Upstate community will come together at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina, to celebrate Green Day presented by TD Bank.
Established by the Drive during its inaugural season 20 years ago, Green Day represents Greenville’s unofficial birthday when the team and the city come together and celebrate everything that is Greenville.
Highlighting the event is the announcement of the official Green Day honoree, representing an individual whose leadership and community priorities have resulted in Greenville becoming the city that it is today.
Over the years the Drive have recognized individuals who have shaped the success of Greenville, men and women who demonstrated the vision, the drive, the perseverance and the entrepreneurial spirit that pushed Greenville forward in meaningful and enduring ways.
Green Day pays homage to those who have made a discernible difference, changed lives for the better, and set up our community for a flourishing future.
Past honorees include some of Greenville’s most influential community, academic and business leaders:
Max and Trudy Heller (2006)
Lillian Brock Flemming and Xanthene Norris (2007)
Tom Barton (2008)
Dan Joyner (2009)
Merl Code (2010)
Dick Riley (2011)
Virginia Uldrick (2012)
Tommy Wyche (2013)
Hayne and Anna Kate Hipp (2014)
David Glenn (2015)
Joe Erwin (2016)
Bob Hughes (2017)
Stewart Spinks (2018)
Mary Duckett (2019)
Mayor Knox White (2021)
Burke Royster (2022)
William Bradshaw (2023)
Carl Sobocinski (2024).
This year, as the Drive celebrates its 20-year legacy and deep connection with the Upstate community, the Greenville Drive announces a special Green Day honoree representing the heart and soul of the team — the fans.
“The allegiance of our fans to their home team and to their city is monumental and momentous,” said Drive Owner and Chairman Craig Brown. “The West End has been transformed. Businesses have sprung up. An entertainment district is emerging. There’s a spirit and energy that emanates from the fans who come downtown to attend a Drive game and enjoy the amenities in and around Fluor Field. Honoring them on Green Day is our way of saying thank you.”
During the celebration, which begins when gates open at 5:45p.m., the Drive will spotlight fans throughout the game, from the ceremonial first pitch thrown by the Drive’s honorary 6 millionth fan, Jeremy Watkins, to surprise giveaways, in-game tributes, and special green inspired food and beverage items at all concession stands.
Fans are encouraged to wear green to create a ‘green out’ effect at the ballpark. To help, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a complimentary custom-designed Green Day T-shirt and the first 1,000 kids get a specially designed Green Day cape, all courtesy of the Green Day presenting partner, TD Bank.
Other Green Day birthday party favors include complimentary cookies, face painting, balloon artists and more.
To cap off the celebration, fans will enjoy a post-game fireworks show immediately following the last out of the game.
