The Bethlehem Center hosted its inaugural Aiming Higher for Community fundraiser at USC Upstate to raise essential funds for the non-profit’s new community center. The evening featured a powerful fireside chat with legendary University of South Carolina Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley.
This event marked a critical milestone for the organization as it proceeds with plans to construct a new, modernized facility in the Highland neighborhood of Spartanburg. The proposed facility will house an early learning center, a senior center, and a gymnasium, expanding the Bethlehem Center's ability to serve residents from early childhood through adulthood.
“When we invest in organizations like The Bethlehem Center, we are investing in the future of Spartanburg,” said Patrena Mims, executive director of the Bethlehem Center. “We are investing in young people who will become tomorrow’s leaders, educators, business owners, and community champions. We are investing in stronger families, stronger neighborhoods, and a stronger community for everyone.”
The fireside chat with Coach Staley was moderated by CFLeads President & CEO and former Executive Director of the Bethlehem Center, Mary Thomas, and Spartanburg Fire Chief Pierre Brewton, who was raised in the Highland neighborhood and attended kindergarten at the Bethlehem Center.
“I have been a member of the Spartanburg community since childhood,” said Chief Brewton. “Growing up in the Highland neighborhood, I saw firsthand how critical the Bethlehem Center is to the community. I am thrilled to be here tonight supporting their work, because this new community center is more than just a building; it is a promise to future generations.”
Bethlehem Center officials noted that the evening was filled with community spirit, featuring an impactful paddle auction where residents who utilize the center’s services shared their personal stories, highlighting the profound difference the organization makes in their daily lives. Guests also had the opportunity to take home signed copies of Coach Staley’s memoir, Uncommon Favor: Basketball, North Philly, My Mother, and the Life Lessons I Learned from All Three.
Funds raised during the event and the ongoing support from the community will directly contribute to the construction of the new facility and the expansion of the Bethlehem Center’s critical services.
