Best and Brightest Greenville 2024
Sep 06, 2024 04:16PM ● By Donna WalkerWelcome to our Best and Brightest 35 and Under! For the first time, we are recognizing individuals in four geographic regions of South Carolina: Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, and now the Grand Strand. We launched our B2B: The Grand Strand edition earlier this year, and we are proud to celebrate 32 young people who are committed to making a difference in their communities in Myrtle Beach and beyond.
Our Greenville edition has the largest contingent of honorees, with 43 people who work in everything from law to real estate, nonprofits to education. This is our 30th year honoring Greenville residents.
In Columbia, we have 38 honorees, while in Charleston we have 34 recipients.
We are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase so many up-and-coming leaders who are making a difference in their communities despite their young ages.
We salute them, and we can’t wait to see what else happens for them in the coming years. Each individual has his or her own story to tell, and it is our privilege to share their stories.
We will honor all of these remarkable leaders at events in their respective cities during the month of September.

Director of Events
Greenville Convention Center
As the director of events at the Greenville Convention Center, I lead a dedicated team committed to enhancing Greenville's event landscape. My journey is fueled by ambition and a passion for community engagement. With a Master's in Public Administration from Columbus State University and over 10 years of experience in venue management, economic development, and government administration, I have transformed ideas into impactful realities.
Most notably, I’ve implemented initiatives that have not only elevated the profile of the convention center but have also created numerous opportunities for local businesses and community members to thrive.
Beyond my professional achievements, I am deeply committed to giving back to the community. As a fresh face in Greenville, giving back to the community shows that I care. It is about more than my own quality of life; I am serious about seeing improvements.

Founder and CEO
Speakez Speech Therapy LLC
I moved to the Greenville area in 2021 after experiencing the beauty of downtown Greenville and the kindness of its people. I felt certain this was where I wanted to live and build my business Speakez Speech Therapy LLC.
Working as a speech-language pathologist, I serve clients who are delayed in their communication abilities. My goal is that my business will continue to expand throughout the area in order to reach more clients, and I look forward to employing more therapists to make this a reality.
In my free time I am involved in organizations including the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Make-A-Wish and Meals on Wheels. I serve as the vice chair for the Greenville Chamber of Young Professionals which has allowed me to build strong relationships with business leaders in Greenville. Through being a part of these organizations, I have realized the importance of building a closer community with those around me. I found the most rewarding aspect of my career to be the relationships I have built personally and professionally.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
A successful leader provides direction while motivating others to be their very best in order to work toward a common goal.

Community Engagement Specialist
Sustaining Way
A Greenville native, I spent my childhood in Easley, where I was part of a traditional Southern family. My great-grandmother Bernice Fleming embodied our family’s belief in helping others. She taught us about service and doing whatever you can for other people. For example, she would take me and my sister to a local nursing home, and we would play bingo and talk with the residents whenever we visited.
This is something that helped me understand that everyone needs support, love and cheering up sometimes. I did not always enjoy going to the nursing home, but when I look back on it, this had a very big impact on my life.
I'm now working for a nonprofit called Sustaining Way, where I'm the community engagement specialist. On a daily basis I get to help those who are in a rough place in their lives and need support in some way. They may be food-insecure coming to our weekly food distribution event or looking for a way to lower their energy bills. People are hurt right now and are looking for ways to find solid ground. At Sustaining Way, we work every day to bring that solid ground to members of the Nicholtown community.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” – Lao Tzu
I think every person needs to understand themselves before they can try to lead others.

Outside of work, you can find me travelling with my husband, Jimmy, walking our miniature dachshund, Butter, around downtown Greenville, and spending time with friends and family.

Cushman & Wakefield
I was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and moved to Greenville, South Carolina with my family in 2004. A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, I hold a Bachelor of Science in economics. My professional career began early, as I obtained my real estate license going into my junior year at USC and started working at a real estate firm in Columbia. After graduation, I returned to Greenville and joined Cushman & Wakefield as a commercial real estate adviser, specializing in office and medical properties.
In my role, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects, from identifying and securing corporate headquarters for multiple companies in the Greenville area to assisting clients with the expansion of their operations across the country. I am also actively involved in the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors, where I serve on the Commercial Steering Committee.

Age 34
Chief Operating Officer
Hughes Development Corporation
Commercial real estate excites me because of its entrepreneurial and tangible nature. Successful development projects are uniquely capable of benefiting the parties involved while positively impacting the surrounding communities.
As a proud Greenville native, I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to be among the many stakeholders working to build upon our city’s strong foundation.
I joined Hughes Development in 2018 after practicing commercial real estate at two great law firms in Greenville. We are a full-service real estate firm that seeks to maximize value and community impact through creative placemaking. In my current role, I help manage the company’s operations across a wide spectrum of functions, including asset and property management, legal operations and human resources.
After graduating from Furman University, I attended Vanderbilt Law School. My wife Erin and I were thrilled to return to Greenville to raise our family. Our girls, Ella and Addy, bring us constant joy. Beyond my role at Hughes Development, I enjoy teaching Real Estate Law for Professionals in Clemson’s Master of Real Estate Development program.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Attitude is everything.” My dad’s favorite refrain during my childhood rings truer for me with each new personal and professional chapter. So much of what we encounter often seems out of our control, but adopting a positive attitude has an outsized impact on both our experiences and outcomes.

Jesse Carter
Age 33
Partner
Streams Development
As a husband, father and real estate developer, I’m driven by a passion for achieving excellence and finding joy in the mundane. My favorite quote expresses this philosophy. It’s from Albert Schweitzer, who said, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” I stand behind this quote and believe it at its core. If you truly love what you are doing, you will be happy and successful.
Being a partner at Streams Development, I’ve had the chance to achieve some significant milestones in my career. My journey started at an early age shadowing my parents as they built a real estate portfolio. This led me to Clemson University where I studied financial management with a focus on real estate investment. This education set the stage for everything I’ve done since.
Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in underwriting, creating investment models, negotiating contracts, entitling land, establishing capital stacks, and creating partnerships. I’m aiming for sustained success and making a real impact in my field and community by fostering innovation and inspiring others.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Just do it. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call anyone. Be yourself, think critically, and ask questions ALWAYS.

Process Mechanical Team Lead
Garver
As process mechanical team leader for Garver’s Greenville Water Design Center, I have the privilege of designing the water and wastewater infrastructure that supplies my home state with clean, reliable water. I’m honored to work with municipalities both locally and nationally to design the water treatment solutions and infrastructure that support the water systems we rely on every day.
One of my proudest moments of my career has been opening a job portfolio and seeing my grandfather’s Professional Engineer stamp. It’s been incredibly special working on the same infrastructure projects that he designed in the 1970s and ‘80s knowing that we’re working together for the betterment of the region.
For me, community service is about setting up Greenville to thrive for decades to come — whether that’s through the water and wastewater infrastructure I design or volunteering at a stream cleanup event with Friends of the Reedy River.
Your favorite quote and why?
“The rock in the water does not understand the suffering of the rock in the sun.” – Haitian proverb
Common wisdom is that to understand someone’s perspective you have to walk a mile in their shoes; in practice, it is not possible to will yourself to experience what others’ have experienced. Instead, you must listen to them and validate their experiences.

Business Development
Banker Exchange, LLC
Born and raised in Greenville, I attended Spartanburg Methodist College, where I ran cross country and track at a collegiate level. After earning my associate’s degree in science, I transferred to the University of South Carolina. While there, I completed my degree in public health and also was involved in Pi Beta Phi sorority, Greek Impact, Girls on the Run, and several other organizations.
Shortly after graduating, I began working at Banker Exchange, LLC and quickly advanced to be an exchange coordinator. After several years, I was promoted to business development. In this role, I connect with clients on a personal level throughout the Upstate, Midlands, and Western North Carolina. I guide them through the complex process of deferring capital gains taxes and lead networking events, educational seminars, and lunch-and-learns on the 1031 exchange process.
Professionally, I serve on the communications committee with Commercial Real Estate Women Greenville (CREW) and CREW Midlands, working to advance women in commercial real estate and form connections. I am also a member or affiliate of several other real estate associations (GGAR, WUAR, PPAR, LOTSAR, CCAR, RPN and SC CCIM), all of which provide opportunities for professional excellence and development in the real estate field.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
I would have told myself, “Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore new things. Be yourself and enjoy life in the present and do not worry about the future. Travel more, let go of what you cannot change, and – most importantly – trust God’s timing and plans even if they do not go as expected.”

Attorney
Fox Rothschild LLP
As a litigation attorney in Fox Rothschild’s Greenville office, my primary focus areas are product liability, toxic and mass torts, and personal injury. I represent high-profile corporations, including leading manufacturers and retailers of industrial equipment and automotive products in a wide variety of litigation matters from start to finish, including trial. I am proud to defend the businesses participating in the thriving South Carolina market.
Staying active in the Greenville community is important to me and I am excited to have recently joined the board of the Greenville Literacy Association. Completing Leadership Greenville (Class 50!) was one of the highlights of my year. I also volunteer with my church, First Presbyterian.
I love raising my two children with my amazing wife in Greenville. In our spare time we are always doing projects around our house and yard and spending time with our animals. The newest addition is our herd of seven goats!
Your favorite quote and why:
“If you hit a wrong note, it’s the next note that you play that determines if it’s good or bad,” is a quote attributed to Miles Davis. I’m no musician, but I try to apply it to any type of speaking I do and to life in general. My motto is to adapt and keep moving forward.
Bryan De Bruin
Age 35
Co-Founder
VanRock Holdings, LLC
As an accomplished attorney and entrepreneur, I have a strong track record in real estate and business law. My role as the manager of De Bruin Law Firm’s real estate and business transaction division is to advise clients on real estate transactions, development, and private equity ventures.
Additionally, I have drafted legislation for clients to include North Carolina’s Bleed and Control Kit Pilot program, which is designed to prevent fatalities in public schools in the event of a mass shooter incident.
Since 2019, I have created and managed a family office fund focused on residential rental portfolio, single-family lot development, and mixed-use multifamily development. In 2022, I co-founded VanRock Holdings, LLC, which focuses on multifamily and build-to-rent communities in the Carolinas with a specific focus on Greenville and Spartanburg. To date, I manage over $100 million in real estate portfolio and development projects, many of which have a workforce housing or affordability component to at least 10 percent of the residence.
I also serve on the board of Fellow Countrymen, a non-profit dedicated to preventing veteran suicide, and provides pro bono legal counsel to non-profits focused on veteran services.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
A successful leader is someone who recognizes their strengths and weaknesses in themselves and then surrounds themselves with people who believe in the vision of the venture and whose strengths are his/her weaknesses. Then they get out of the way.
Taylor Dietz

Consultant
Quest Site Solutions
I’m an economic developer by trade – building community is one of my favorite interests. I have the privilege of helping communities and clients make crucial economic growth decisions across the U.S. I have supported more than $640 million in capital investment and the creation of more than 5,200 jobs. I am a certified economic developer through the International Economic Development Council – a certification belonging to only 1,200 people – and hold three degrees from Georgia College & State University.
I am passionate about economic and community development and how they coincide to change lives. To put my long-term goal simply – to help make a difference in a lot of neighborhoods in a lot of different ways.
I am happiest when my productivity lies in improving the world around me, so long as I don’t lose myself in the process. I don’t know if it is giving back as it is paying it forward, but I am glad that I get to do that here at home in Greenville.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
I think a successful leader prioritizes the well-being of the people and the communities entrusted to their care. It’s less about the immediate results; it’s about fostering an environment where people are safe to feel things, to learn things and to try things. I am interested in whether leaders prioritize active listening and empathy. Do they seek to understand the needs of others? Do they foster environments where people feel empowered? Do you foster collaboration for a shared sense of purpose? Do they embody ethical values and act with integrity? When the desire to serve precedes the ambition to lead, the very act of leadership itself becomes the measure of success.

Assistant Director of OnTrack Greenville
United Way of Greenville County
Turning big ideas into action as assistant director at OnTrack Greenville, I chase the mission of ensuring every student graduates from college or is career-ready. My background in adolescent health allows me to bridge the gap by translating best practices into actionable strategies.
But progress requires collaboration, and ensuring our work is community-driven. It has been an honor to be part of this incredible team and travel nationally to share Greenville’s accomplishments at conferences and in publications to reach a broader audience.
While I am a systems-thinker at heart, I am fueled by witnessing the incredible achievements of the next generation. From passing the first Tobacco 21 ordinance in South Carolina to launching student coalitions, these wins across the Upstate are my north star. Their talent inspires me to advocate for their future, on and off the clock.
That's why I volunteer with nonprofits and serve on boards tackling food insecurity, equine-assisted therapy, and animal rescue. Together, we each play our part in creating an equitable community where all can thrive.
Your favorite quote and why:
“So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” – Matthew 6:34
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the future, especially when we’re passionate about serving and making a positive change. While I strive to make a difference, worrying about what might happen can steal the joy from the present moment.

Turner Padget Graham and Laney P.A.
An Honors Psychology graduate, I attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While a student, I served as a processor for the Forensic Anthropology Center ("The Body Farm").
After graduation, I moved to South Carolina to pursue a law degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Prior to joining Turner Padget, I worked for South Carolina Legal Services, a nonprofit law firm with a mission of providing equal access to justice for all. Now at Turner Padget, my focus is on guiding clients comfortably through the estate planning process, administering the estates of their lost loved ones, and zealously representing clients in probate litigation cases.
My goal as a leader – serving as chair of the S.C. Bar Elder Law Committee and also chair of the S.C. YLD Willis Committee – is to inspire and motivate others. Leaders need to foster an environment of collaboration and mutual respect.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
That we are going to make it – the long nights at the UTK library and even longer nights at UofSC Law will be well-worth the work, and now we have a successful career as an attorney.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Oh, where do I start? Dear little me, don't let the opinions of others sway your innate truth inside you. People, opportunities and opinions are not rare. What is rare is your drive and people navigating skillsets. So, continue to do the kind thing, do the brave thing and know that every experience is shaping the woman you will continue to become, whether you see it in the moment or not, things are always working out for you and your success is inevitable.

Manager
Shellpoint Mortgage Servicing
As a first-generation American, I have had to navigate higher education and a corporate career on my own. This has led me to seek mentors and to become one. I am currently a senior leader at Shellpoint Mortgage Servicing where I manage teams in document administration. I previously held a role where I focused on leadership development and effective performance coaching locally and internationally.
After earning my commission as an Army officer, I obtained my MBA. This allowed me to study leadership extensively, which I apply not only in my career but when giving back to the community. I am an active member of the Junior League of Greenville and Greenville Chamber Young Professionals. I am a mentor with the Student Dreamers Alliance and volunteer with the Julie Valentine Center. I also coach and serve on the board of directors for Girls on the Run.
Giving back goes hand in hand with awareness and representation. I am passionate about this because it is an opportunity for positive change to happen in our wonderful Greenville.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
DO IT SCARED. All adventures and challenges will be fun but there will be times you second guess yourself. Don’t hold back because you’re scared of failure or not knowing exactly how things will go. If you fail, fail hard and do it again. Learn from everyone you meet, do extraordinary things, and surround yourself with people that make you laugh.

Since moving to Greenville, I have also become involved in the local community through participation in local nonprofit organizations, such as the Poe Mill Achievement Center, which offers a free after-school and summer program to Greenville County elementary students.
Favorite quote and why:
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
I have found time and time again that community fosters a better outcome, particularly in the long run. When it comes to your career, you do not need to struggle through something alone. Seeking guidance from others can propel you further towards your ultimate goals.

Sales Manager, Palmetto Air and Water Balance/Host and founder, Live Life in Motion Podcast
I will never take for granted growing up in the Greenville community. My dad was a small business owner, my mom worked for nonprofits, and now my sister is now a small business owner in Greenville. All things I’m proud of.
What I love the most about my time in Greenville are the friendships I’ve been fortunate to have. Some of my best memories are building those friendships through the local public schools and playing multiple sports. Achieving success on the soccer field at Greenville High and CESA, led me to play at the University of South Carolina where I graduated in 2011.
After living in Atlanta and NYC, I’m proud to say I’m moved back to Greenville in 2017. I married the girl of my dreams in 2022, and we couldn’t be happier living in Greenville!
I’m in my seventh year working for Palmetto Air & Water Balance and I’m the host/founder of the Live Life in Motion Podcast. My mission at both are to serve the communities we are in!
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Keep living. Life will throw you curveballs but tough times don't last when you keep moving forward with a positive mindset! Also, invest in Apple and Google.

Co-Owner
iTrust Wellness
As a believer in passion and tenacity, I am proud to be the co-owner of iTrust Wellness Group, one of the 50 Fastest Growing Companies in South Carolina. I've been honored with awards such as Sales Rookie of the Year at Cumulus Media and the Skookum Award of Excellence at Western New England University.
Initially, I planned to work part-time at iTrust and return to school to become a family and marriage counselor. However, I found the business side extremely rewarding. Using my sales experience, I reached out to primary care doctors, OB-GYN offices, and local therapists to promote our mental health medication management care. We started with 50 patients and now have over 5,000.
I started several departments from scratch, including referrals, billing, business development, elderly care services, and marketing. At times, it's hard to pin down my job title. This work is fulfilling because I believe our services make a difference in people's lives. Knowing someone who lost their life to suicide, I wholeheartedly believe we are restoring a sense of self, joy, and stability to those struggling with mental health conditions, which has a ripple effect on families, friends, and the overall community.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
A great leader is like a coach who inspires through a blend of empathy and logic. Empathy helps you earn trust, while logic earns your credibility. This combination creates high motivation in your team, allowing you to lead a group that is proud to deliver on the mission or task ahead.

Project Manager
Trehel
I was born and raised in Greenville and have spent the majority of my life here. Outside the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two sons, playing golf, and cheering on my Clemson Tigers.
The wisdom I’ve gained since I was 18 is to slow down and take your time. The only resource you can’t generate is time. Spend less time trying to get to the next destination and more time enjoying the trip.
With more than 10 years of experience in commercial construction, I currently serve as a project manager for Trehel, overseeing complex projects from concept to completion. I have had the opportunity to work on notable projects including multiple phases of The Greenville Drive’s stadium expansion, additions to Wade Hampton Golf Club’s clubhouse, and the construction of Piedmont Women’s Center.
Currently, I am overseeing construction of the Spinx Market in downtown Greenville in addition to other projects.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
A successful leader is one that has a lead worth following – a leader that sets an example through their words and actions. It is a humble person who puts the interests of others before their own. Most importantly, a successful leader will connect with their people and organization, anticipate others’ needs, understand what motivates people, and empower them to pursue excellence in their craft.

Spero Financial
A Michigan native, I moved to the Upstate almost seven years ago with my husband, James, and my two daughters, Brookelyn and Quinn. Since being in the Upstate we’ve added two sweet boys, Silas and Elijah to our family. I’m a busy mom but also a devoted professional. I started my career in banking right out of school while going through college. It was supposed to be a job to pass time but quickly became an enjoyment of mine.
I’m passionate about helping people. Early in my career I was able to help the Marines at Camp Pendleton learn about finances and how to budget their money. Seeing the light in their eyes when they realized how much control they can have over their futures was inspiring. That’s when I also started getting more involved with the community.
My community activities include volunteering for soup kitchens and donating my time to spread financial wellness. Currently, I’m working to start a program with the Golden Strip Career Center to bring a financial education program to their freshman class. I’m active in both the Simpsonville and Fountain Inn Chamber of Commerce, serving on various committees and boards to help the businesses and communities in which we live and work.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.” – James Dean
This quote has inspired me since I was younger. It reminds me that we should have big goals and aspirations and we need to make the most out of every day because the next day is never promised.

Partner
Maxey McFarland Law Firm
While I was born and raised in Horry County, I am proud to have called Greenville home since 2016. I am a trial lawyer at Maxey McFarland Law Firm in Greenville, where I practice with my partner, Elizabeth McFarland. Our practice focuses on personal injury, workers’ compensation, and wrongful death cases.
As a law firm leader, I believe it’s important to listen intently to our team members and stakeholders. Acting at all times with integrity and honesty and placing the interests of the group ahead of my own individual ambitions is the definition of a successful leader. Be decisive, but not hasty.
Prior to opening our firm in 2023, I worked as an associate attorney at a small Upstate personal injury firm. Before entering private practice, I served as an assistant solicitor, where I regularly tried cases before juries and prosecuted crimes ranging from DUI to drug trafficking. Prior to practicing law, I graduated from Clemson University and from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
I am proud to be a plaintiff’s lawyer, because it allows me to serve my community while zealously representing my clients.
Your favorite quote and why:
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” – Atticus Finch
Though fictional, Atticus has always been an inspiration to me as a person and a lawyer, never more so than when he explains that true courage is not shown through brute force or violence, but by doing the right thing even when it isn’t popular and even when you know you’re going to lose.

Peace Center
As a lifelong arts advocate, I’ve dedicated myself to ensuring my community has access to exceptional arts experiences. Over the last 15 years, I’ve been a part of raising over $50 million in philanthropic investments in arts initiatives in Seattle, Charlotte, and now Greenville.
At the Peace Center, I provide strategic direction for all philanthropic endeavors, collaborating closely with president and CEO Megan Riegel and our development team. Together, we raise $4 million annually and have secured over $25 million in private and public funding for the Peace Center’s 2030 Vision Plan, which includes adding two new music venues.
Before joining the Peace Center two years ago, I held leadership roles at various not-for-profit arts organizations, including VP of philanthropy at McColl Center for Art + Innovation, executive director of Three Dollar Bill Cinema, and director of philanthropy at the Seattle International Film Festival. I earned an MFA in Arts Leadership from Seattle University, a BA in theatre-stage directing and management from Greensboro College and I am a certified fundraising executive (CFRE).

Owner
Adrenaline Dance Fitness
I was born and raised in Greenville, and am the oldest of five siblings. I got my first job at age 15, bought my home in Greenville at 22, graduated from North Greenville University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business at 24, and officially began my own business on my 26th birthday. At 31, I was promoted to a finance director role, and two years later started studying for the CMA. I believe this is just my beginning.
Before starting Adrenaline Dance Fitness, I didn’t think of myself as an entrepreneur. I grew up surrounded by friends and family members who struggled with obesity or eating disorders, and I saw how it affected their lives and the lives of those who loved them. This motivated me to create a safe, non-judgmental place for people to work on their physical and mental health. I am passionate about positive body image and want Adrenaline to be a space where people feel seen, loved, and supported.
I have a big heart for community and love being part of Greenville’s. I volunteer with Fostering Great Ideas, United Way of Greenville, and Meals on Wheels.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Only ever be exactly who you are and never who someone else or the world believes you should be. Trust the journey and enjoy the present moments – don't always be so focused on the future and what comes next.

Development Manager
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate
Originally from Seattle, Washington, I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with degrees in psychology and political science. After moving to Greenville in 2021 to be closer to family, my husband and I tied the knot and welcomed our daughter, marking a new chapter in our lives. My diverse heritage and roots include Colombian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Chinese backgrounds, which greatly influence my perspective and values.
My career journey began in program management, focusing on at-risk youth in Washington, igniting my passion for supporting young individuals in achieving their goals. With more than 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector spanning program management, data analytics, and development fundraising, I am deeply committed to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. Currently, I design DEI training and create curriculum for local professionals to engage in crucial conversations.
Active community involvement is integral to my values, evident through my board roles at the Simpsonville Chamber, University Center of Greenville, and the national initiative Poderistas. By fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity within the vibrant and diverse Upstate community, I strive to make a positive impact.
Your favorite quote and why:
“We must use our lives to make the world a better place to live, not just to acquire things. That is what we are put on the earth for.” – Dolores Huerta
I wholeheartedly believe that we all want purpose in our lives. By utilizing our unique talents to create a positive impact, we honor our existence and those who came before us. Like Dolores, embody a spirit of contribution while acknowledging the influences that have guided you.

A native of Anderson now settled in Greenville, I have cultivated a diverse career in legal marketing, event management, and real estate. As the owner and creative director of Celesia Faith & Co., a marketing and events agency, I thrive on bringing ideas to fruition. My experience in real estate further complements my portfolio, navigating negotiations and transactions with a strong commitment to client satisfaction and ethical standards.
I find joy in serving in Christian ministry, exploring the outdoors, and supporting my alma mater, the University of South Carolina. My career has taken me around the world, developing client relationships globally – but the Upstate of South Carolina is my home. There’s beauty in this place that cannot be explained. You can leave it, but it never leaves you.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” – Proverbs 31:30
My personal and career success comes from honoring God and serving others. This timeless wisdom encourages me to prioritize character, integrity, and spiritual depth in my life. I honor and appreciate my parents for stewarding a life grounded in faith.

Director of Marketing & Communications
Upstate Warrior Solution
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, I moved to the Upstate in 1999 and enjoyed growing up with Greenville, so to speak. Watching the Upstate transform over the last 25 years has been both inspiring and a point of pride.
After attending Greenville Technical College, I completed my bachelor’s in mass communications from USC Upstate. My passion for mission-driven work led me to a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA in 2019 and then into the nonprofit sector with Upstate Warrior Solution.
Over the past five years, I’ve grown and honed my skills as a strategic storyteller, relationship builder, and event creator. As UWS’s Director of Marketing and Communications, I get to do what I love most: use language and logistics to inspire and mobilize the community around causes that matter. Whether it’s capturing the experiences of veterans through storytelling or bringing hundreds together for events that honor local heroes, I’m grateful for every opportunity to connect with others and to create meaningful moments.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Don’t be afraid to explore; don’t be afraid of wrong turns or dead ends. If you apply yourself wholeheartedly, nothing is ever wasted.
Shawn Potwardowski
Age 26
Virtual Design Construction Manager
Brasfield & Gorrie
My humble beginnings were rooted in the waterside village of Lakeville, Michigan, where an immeasurable amount of hours were spent exploring the inland lakes and woods. The love of family is irreplaceable. After high school, my life was a slurry of travel, exciting experiences, and learning.
It was during those years that my appreciation for nature developed into a passion, pushing me to become the vice president of the University of Alabama Bass Fishing Team.
As I ventured further from my family, the more I realized that home offers rejuvenation like nothing else. But without heading South, I might have ended up in Detroit like my fellow students, working for an automative company in mechanical engineering, my chosen major. Instead, a few friends on the college fishing team ultimately shed light onto the world of construction management. From there, I never looked back, completing years of internships with Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors, and signed on full time in Greenville in 2021.
I’ve used my critical problem-solving skills from my major in the Virtual Design and Construction and Innovation Department, where I am able to explore, invent, model, and help project teams grasp complex healthcare and commercial projects all around Greenville.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Never does nature say one thing and wisdom another.” – Juvenal
I’ve been blessed to have spent much of my youth – in a meditative mindset - among the rambling streams, towering canopies, and glassy lakes of the Eastern United States. From what I’ve witnessed so far, nature has made certain truths apparent: truths that are harmonious with the simple fables and nursery rhymes of our childhoods, including “Slow and steady wins the race” and “Build your dwelling with bricks and not straw.”

Director of Recruitment Marketing & Strategy
Phillips Staffing
After leaving my hometown of Orlando, Florida, and attending Clemson University for my undergraduate degree, I was captivated by the hospitality and beauty of the Upstate of South Carolina. Following my graduation from Clemson, I enrolled in their Master of Business Administration program, where I was introduced to Phillips Staffing through an HR internship.
Upon earning my MBA, I transitioned into a full-time recruiting position at Phillips Staffing, where I supported multiple clients in the Oconee County area. After a year, I assumed the role of talent acquisition team lead, spearheading the company’s direct hire recruitment operations.
In May 2024, I was promoted to director of recruitment marketing and strategy. I leverage various marketing and recruitment platforms to enhance brand visibility and company efficiency. My expertise includes developing and executing messaging campaigns, managing candidate engagement software, creating marketing materials and overseeing social media content. I am passionate about recruiting because it enables me to make a positive impact on one of the most crucial aspects of someone’s life – their career.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
A successful leader is one who values collaboration and listens intently to those around them. Allowing others to showcase their unique talents and opinions fosters an environment for growth and positive change. Respected leaders are those who put aside the pursuit of personal glory in order to prioritize the collective success of the team.

Age 31
Senior Art Director
Crawford
As the senior art director at Crawford, I am responsible for crafting the artistic vision for our stellar list of clients. I get to work with a fantastic crew of misfits and hooligans, crafting attention-grabbing designs from brand identities to multi-channel campaigns. As much as I love the creative process, the most rewarding part of my job has more to do with people than pixels. Supporting young creatives (and sometimes old ones, too) gives me the satisfaction of knowing that everything I’ve learned on my journey so far can be helpful for someone else navigating their own creative career journey.
Success as a leader is having the great fortune and opportunity to foster growth and accomplishment in others, greater than they may have had otherwise.
This year, I had the opportunity to test my limit for positive affirmation as the coach of my 3-year-old son’s YMCA soccer team. Though I don’t recommend that to everyone, I absolutely recommend signing up for a delivery route through Meals on Wheels Greenville.
Your favorite quote and why:
“He not busy being born is busy dying.” – Bob Dylan
I love this lyric from Dylan because it’s a great reminder of the consequence of inaction. As someone who suffers from acute indecisiveness, oftentimes I need to remind myself that making a decision is better than overthinking to make the “right” decision.

Construction Manager
Gabriel Builders
I was born and raised in Greenville, the son of a Cuban immigrant. Hard work and faith have always been the cornerstones of my life. Despite receiving scholarship offers to play basketball, I chose to pursue my education at Clemson University. There, I earned a degree in construction science and management with a minor in business administration.
After graduation, I embarked on a career as a project manager at Gabriel Builders. Over the years, I've had the privilege of overseeing the construction of more than 15 homes, each averaging over $4 million. For me, every project is an opportunity to create someone's dream home. I approach each day with the same care and dedication as if I were building my own home, viewing everyone on site as part of a united family working toward a common goal.
A few years into my career, I decided to diversify my experience by founding Fatsack Outdoors, a mobile fishing application. Through Fatsack, users can seamlessly integrate catch data, lake information, and e-commerce functionalities. Securing over $1 million in angel funding enabled us to bring this innovative product to market. I eventually transitioned to a strategic role, handing over day-to-day operations to a capable CEO, which allowed me to focus entirely on Gabriel Builders.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Write down the stories from your grandparents, enjoy each day for what it is, and don’t get caught up worrying about the future.

Navigation Manager
The Phoenix Center
I take great pride in being a Greenville native and feel honored to raise my sons here. As a believer in Christ, I see myself as a lifelong student, learning from every experience that has shaped me.
As I approach my 10th year with The Phoenix Center, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most incredible individuals, "serving and loving every day."
During my time here, I have been honored by my colleagues as a two-time Leader of the Year and Manager of the Year.
My goal as a leader is to become successful by developing more leaders and inspiring others.
One of my greatest accomplishments was managing the development of the Navigation department for our agency, intending to make admissions across our continuum of services easier and timelier. In the first year, we saw a 90 percent increase in performance in one measured area and a 92 percent decrease in wait time for clients.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Your experiences are unique, savor every moment!

Founder, Executive Director
Judson Community Partnership
I have been in the social work field for most of my career – after traveling the country playing music and working a brief stint as a flight attendant! I currently serve as the founder and executive director of Judson Community Partnership (JCP).
JCP is an after-school program that provides both art therapy and mental health intervention to high-risk elementary-aged students from a Title 1 elementary school in Greenville. Students are referred to us by their school social worker based on need. We then provide our students with a holistic approach to healing that combines consistent love and support alongside effective therapeutic interventions.
I also coach high school sports and spend a lot of my time out on the lacrosse field. My high school coach made a profound impact on me, and expanded my view of who I could be on and off the field. My hope is that I can do the same for the girls I coach.
My goal in life is to leave everyone and everything better than I found it. At the end of the day, I want to be known for loving people well.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
I heard a quote once that said a great leader gives you the credit and takes the blame. I love that.

Prisma Health
A native Carolinian, I am originally from a small town in North Carolina. I come from a family of strong women; my grandmother raised seven children, my mother was the first woman in our family to graduate from college, and I was the first woman in our family to graduate from professional school.
After studying medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine (USCSOM) in Columbia, I attended the Prisma Health/USCOM Greenville for my emergency medicine residency. I have since graduated residency and am currently practicing as an emergency physician with Prisma Health.
In addition to treating health care emergencies in the Upstate, I have published case reports in national medical journals, I am an assistant clinical professor for USC Greenville School of Medicine, and I serve as a mentor to students interested in physician residency programs.
I currently work at emergency departments in Greenville, Travelers Rest, Laurens, Simpsonville, Greer, Easley, and Oconee. Serving in these areas has allowed me to connect on a professional and personal level with the diversity of the peoples around the Upstate.
Your favorite quote and why:
“Never forget what a privilege and responsibility it is that people who don’t know you ask for your help on the worst day of their life.” – Amal Mattu
During difficult days in the hospital, I reflect on this quote, and it gives me the passion to keep working through hard times.

Clayton Construction Company, Inc.
Growing up in Florence, South Carolina, as the son of a small business owner, I always knew I wanted to work for a community-focused company. When I graduated from Clemson’s Masters in Accounting program, I worked in public accounting for four years until I joined Clayton Construction Company, Inc. in my current role. I have been blessed to be at CCC for nine years and look forward to many more to come.
As a member of the executive team at Clayton Construction Company, I assume a strategic role in the overall management of the company. My day-to-day responsibilities include planning, implementing, and managing all financial-related activities for CCC. I also assume direct responsibility for accounting, forecasting, strategic planning, legal, property management, deal analysis and negotiations, and private and institutional financing.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of a great company that is active in the community and prioritizes people before profits.

Senior Research Analyst
Cushman & Wakefield
Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, I decided to call Greenville “home” after graduating from Clemson University. After a few years spent in the business world searching for a career path of interest, I returned to Clemson University and earned my MBA. That experience led me to join Cushman & Wakefield in 2021 where I provide analytics and thought leadership surrounding the commercial real estate market in Greenville and throughout the Carolinas.
As a leader, I’ve found that successful leadership happens when one leads by example with humility and when one understands the value of listening. A servant leader will always gain loyal followership.
I find it rewarding to piece together data and information to explain the great opportunities that exist within Greenville for development and doing business. This position has allowed me to come home to my wife, newborn daughter, and dog with a sense of accomplishment each day. My long-term goal is to be a pivotal piece in the growth and development of Greenville while continuing to serve the existing community.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Time will always be your most valuable asset because it is always fleeting. Spend it around those you love the most and do the things you love to do often.

Maynard Nexsen PC
Being a homegrown Greenville native, I obtained my undergraduate degree from Clemson University and went on to graduate with a juris doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
My career as an attorney began in the employment practice group, advising clients on various employment matters. However, I found that my true passion was for real estate and corporate transactions. Now that I have found what I deem to be the more fun side of the law (yes, it does exist), I regularly advise clients on the purchase and sale of real estate, economic incentives, and other corporate transactions.
While I grew up in Greenville, my community involvement as a young professional began with my membership at Grace Church, and my involvement with the Urban Land Institute and the YP division of the Greenville Chamber. Most recently, Meals on Wheels GYP afforded me the opportunity to serve as a member of their executive council. It has been incredibly rewarding to give back to the Greenville community, and I hope to do so for many years to come!
Your favorite quote and why:
“You can stand anything for 10 seconds, then you can start on a new 10 seconds.” – Kimmy Schmidt of “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
One of the biggest obstacles in developing as a young attorney (or, really, life in general) is dealing with the unknown or the seemingly impossible. This quote reminds me that if I can just get through the next 10 seconds, or the next task or the next day, there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if that tunnel is made up of 50,000 10-second intervals. It also makes me laugh, which is a plus.

Executive Director of Social Media
Clemson University
I often tell people, I came to Clemson in 2011 as a student, and they haven’t made me leave yet. As a native of Greenville and the son of a Clemson alum, it was the only place I wanted to attend school. I knew without a doubt I wanted to be a doctor when I first stepped foot on campus. Thirteen years (and one marketing class) later, I am the executive director of social media and an adjunct lecturer in the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.
My journey in social media started as a student manager with Clemson’s baseball team capturing content of the team’s equipment and travel experiences. In 2016, I made the move to the academic side of campus and have worked my way up to lead the university’s social media efforts. In addition to serving as a social media expert for our campus, I also speak regularly in classes across various degree programs and conferences.
What is your definition of a successful leader?
I believe a successful leader is one who cares about the people they are leading and sets clear expectations for their teams. I regularly remind my team that I care about them as people before I care about them as employees. That has helped to develop a great sense of trust and appreciation for our work. I strive to always be honest with them and set a clear path for what success looks like for our group.

I am the youngest of three brothers who all grew up in State College, Pa., where my parents still reside. My journey to Upstate South Carolina began when I attended Clemson University, graduating in 2015 with a BS in corporate finance. In 2022, I joined Air Compressor Services as employee No. 21 (we now have 62) and currently serve as the VP of finance. We’re entering our third consecutive year as a “Best Place to Work” and an Inc. 5000 company.
I am also a proud member of the recovery community, dedicated to carrying the message and using my experience to help other men on their paths to sobriety. As a younger member of this community, I strive to give back as much as possible. The unexpected loss of my brother in 2020 marked a significant turning point in my life. I endeavor to use my experiences to foster positivity and drive change in the world.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Mistakes are going to be made, and tragic life circumstances are sometimes unavoidable. Don’t make excuses, or hold resentments, just learn from your part in it and become better from them. Use setbacks as fuel to become smarter and better, and always keep moving forward!
