When Kay Stanley and Curt Seymour sold their internationally recognized scrapbooking company and moved to Daufuskie Island to enjoy retirement, it wasn’t too long before they were hard at work on another venture. Named for the native marsh grasses, Spartina was launched in 2009 and draws inspiration from the island into its line of handbags, accessories, and jewelry. While Stanley designs, Seymour oversees the business details and has also come up with a line of golf accessories. Featured in Oprah’s O Magazine, SELF, People StyleWatch, Good Housekeeping, and more, the Spartina brand has earned national recognition in a very short time. Now, Spartina products are sold online as well as in more than 1,200 stores nationwide, spreading the stories of the Lowcountry, intricately woven into the product patterns, with them. In order to celebrate and help preserve the area’s culture and history that inspires their work, Spartina donates a portion of all proceeds to the nonprofit Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation.
