Greenville Women Giving awarded United Ministries $54,000 to purchase a van that will be used to provide transportation for homeless families and underserved individuals to essential community resources and programs.

“We have families who want to take advantage of the wonderful programs we have, but the reality is that the whole system of caring can fall apart if a van breaks down.  Greenville Women Giving has recognized how vital that transportation piece is,” Baxter Wynn, United Ministries’ Board Member.

The purchase of a 15-passenger bus will provide safe transportation for homeless families between United Ministries’ interim housing units, the hospitality network of congregations (hosting families week-by-week), and transformative programs.  United Ministries’ programs provide both crisis intervention and life-changing opportunities that improve families’ future stability, such as:  food/financial assistance; hygiene services/case management for homeless individuals; individualized instructions for GED or Career Readiness Certificates; skills training and job placement with at least 12 months of case management; financial literacy training, and perhaps even matched savings or financial assistance.

With the help of Greenville Women Giving, 300 family members annually will be conveyed throughout Greenville, helping to overcome a major barrier for those living in poverty – lack of transportation.  The bus will also be used for collaborative ventures:  transporting 90 Overcomers annually from United Ministries’ job training back to Miracle Hill Ministries; supporting Our Eyes Were Opened poverty tours; and occasionally conveying partners to visit homeless sites.

Homeless families are unable to afford homes, public transportation, or food for their children.  They often lack the education, skills, jobs or financial resources needed to change.  By providing the means to transportation, Greenville Women Giving is forging life-changing pathways for families seeking assistance from United Ministries.
