Individual Income Tax Deadline Is Monday

If you've waited until the last minute to file your tax return, well, it's almost the last minute.

Monday, April 15, 2024 is the deadline to file your 2023 South Carolina Individual Income Tax return.

As of April 5, more than 1.6 million returns have been filed, about 96 percent of them electronically.

If you've put off filing until now, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) has the following tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible:

Last-minute filing reminders

Make sure you have all W-2s, 1099s, and other necessary documents before you file – If you need a copy of your 2021 or 2022 return, remember you can access transcripts of past SC Individual Income Tax Returns using  MyDORWAY (MyDORWAY.dor.sc.gov), the SCDOR's free online tax portal.

If you're looking for transcripts of past federal returns, log in to your IRS Online Account.

Choose the online filing method that's right for you – Filing online with a reputable provider is convenient, secure, and accurate. Many South Carolinians are eligible to file online for free with easy-to-use tax preparation software.

Choose direct deposit – the fastest and safest refund option, since your refund is deposited directly into your bank account. 

Be sure the SCDOR and your employer have your current address – Customers with a MyDORWAY account can update their address with the SCDOR by logging in, clicking the More tab, and selecting Manage Names & Addresses.

Need more time to file? You may need to request an extension.

If you don't think you'll be able to file before Monday's deadline, you can request an extension, which pushes your deadline to file until Oct. 15, 2024.

Before you ask for an extension, keep in mind that extending the deadline for filing your return does not delay the deadline for paying any tax due.

If you expect to owe a balance, you are still required to pay what you owe by April 15, 2024.

If you don't owe taxes and are requesting an extension from the IRS, you don't need to request one from the SCDOR. Keep a copy of your federal extension request for your records.

If you owe additional taxes, the fastest and easiest way to request an extension is to pay what you owe on MyDORWAY.

Go to dor.sc.gov/pay and select Individual Income Tax Payment to get started. Your payment on MyDORWAY automatically submits your filing extension request.

You can also submit your request by paper using the SC4868, Request for Extension of Time to File. Use the attached voucher to send in payment for any balance due on your taxes.

Waiting on a refund?

Tax return and refund processing takes up to 8 weeks to allow the SCDOR to use all available tools to check for fraud and protect your refund.

If you choose a paper check refund, your processing time may be longer.

After you file, check your refund status online at dor.sc.gov/refund.

Need to pay what you owe?

If you owe money after filing your return, the SCDOR recommends making your payment at dor.sc.gov/pay.

Select Individual Income Tax Payment, then enter your SSN and Legal Name to get started.

On the next screen, select Return Payment.

Greenville-Spartanburg Absorption, Vacancy Improved From Q4 2023

Overall office performance improved in the first quarter of 2024 as 202,074 square feet were absorbed, decreasing vacancy to 16.25 percent, according to a 2024 Q1 Greenville-Spartanburg office report from Colliers.

Collier also said downtown expansions were more prevalent, removing blocks of higher-rate Class A and B spaces from the market.

It said absorption of available space caused a decrease in overall Class A lease rates to $27.43 per square foot due to the remaining vacancy being in less desirable buildings.

Class B spaces experienced an increase and C spaces remained flat. Collier said the Greenville-Spartanburg office market remains attractive and performance metrics are expected to further improve in the second quarter of 2024.

While expansions were more prevalent in the CBD, the suburbs also performed well in the first quarter of 2024, making up 104,034 of the 202,074 square feet of positive absorption, Colliers said.

It said the market as a whole experienced healthy decreases in office vacancy, dropping from 15.92 percent to 13.98 percent in the CBD and 18.54 percent to 17.45 percent in the suburbs as companies continue to consider older buildings in search of more space.

Clemson Genetics Major Receives Prestigious Truman Award

Recognized for her commitment to raising accessibility awareness and ambition to influence health care policy related to her rare disease research, Elizabeth Caldwell of Hendersonville, Tenn., a National Scholar and third-year genetics major, has been named a Truman Scholar.

She is Clemson’s fourth Truman Scholar since 2017 and the university’s fifth recipient in 42 years.

The Truman Scholarship, named in honor of the late U.S. President Harry S. Truman, is given to high-achieving college students who show commitment to public service and potential to continue that service beyond graduation.

Caldwell will receive up to $30,000 for graduate study, leadership training, career counseling and other opportunities within the federal government.

“I am incredibly excited and honored to join this amazing network of change-makers and advocates,” said Caldwell. 

Caldwell plans to work at the intersection of medicine and health-care policy, with a focus on addressing patients with rare diseases that involve both invisible and visible disabilities.

She plans to attend the Truman Summer Institute after she graduates and eventually apply for competitive MD/MPH programs to begin her career serving the health-care sector.
