Under a warm October sun, ground was officially broken Oct. 21, 2020, on a 12-acre mixed-use development that began in 2017 with the purchase of a single acre by local real estate attorney J. Darryl Holland, and promises to spark renewed interest in Greenville's Laurens Road corridor.

"It's been two years in the making," Holland told onlookers and media gathered at the site for the groundbreaking. "We're excited to bring this to the city of Greenville and the county of Greenville."

Overall, Holland was able to complete six real estate closings, resulting in the 12-acre parcel known as Holland Park that fronts Laurens Road, backs up to the planned extension of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and sits near the intersection of Laurens and East Washington Street.

The development's first phase will include Double Stamp Brewery and Charleston-based Home Team BBQ.

The new businesses will be a boon to an area that has lost some retail, including Frugal Backpacker.

"This is a wonderful glimpse of what the future of Laurens Road is all about," said Mayor Knox White. "And I would make a confident prediction that with the Swamp Rabbit Trail that this whole section of Laurens Road will indeed be one of the fastest-changing corridors in the entire city of Greenville."
