Columbia Officials Unanimously Approve Emergency Ordinance Extending Face-Covering Requirement

Aug 04, 2020 04:20PM ● By David Dykes

Saying Covid-19 continues to be a serious public health concern, Mayor Steve Benjamin and Columbia City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance extending the requirement that face coverings or masks be worn in public in the city of Columbia.

The action also extends temporary suspension of the city's normal operating procedures, and allows the mayor and members of the council, boards and commissions to remotely participate in voting and operational procedures by telephone or other means of electronic communication.

City officials said the action was necessary to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and protect public health.

The officials said the emergency ordinance will be terminated when another ordinance is issued or  automatically expire 61 days after enactment.
