They say kids have engines that never stop, so it seems fitting that on Tuesday, more than 200 Upstate middle and high schoolers will get to see real-life race cars and hear from drivers and engineers at the Acura/Honda STEAM Connections Tour at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).

The event will showcase STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art and math — in motorsports and the automotive industry by exposing kids to Indy/Formula SAE race cars, race car drivers and other related activities while visiting one of the premier automotive research campuses in the world.

Katherine Legge, a driver with more than 12 years of professional experience who will compete later in the week in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, will be the principal speaker.

“STEAM is really important to me and I like to promote science, technology, engineering and math as much as I can,” Legge said. “I love talking about the fun things you can do with STEAM and the careers it can lead to.”

The Honda STEAM Connections Tour of universities across the nation is in its second year and is organized and managed by STEAM Sports Group.

The event will feature everything from two Acura NSX GT3 race cars to tours of the university’s Deep Orange student vehicle prototype program. The students will get peeks inside the race cars and will be able to ask questions of Honda Performance Development trackside engineer Gary Karamikian.
